Notes and recommendations
Notes and recommendations
-Wash by hand with water removing all clay or mud, towel dry and leave to air dry.
-Do not leave your tools submerged in water or soaked.
-When using the tool on the lathe, you can submerge it in the water in the basin to clean it but then leave it out, do not leave it floating.
-Do not use chemicals or abrasives.
-Apply mineral oil and beeswax ointment or other special wood oil occasionally.
-For occasional maintenance you can use very fine sandpaper 320+ and ointments or special natural oils for wood, let the product dry 24h before use.
-If at any time you notice that the wood is rougher than you like after the first use or at later times, you can gently sand the surface with fine sandpaper 320+ and reapply protection for a smoother finish to the touch. This aspect does not affect the proper functioning of the tool.
-The final product may have slight variations in color and wood grain due to the use of a natural raw material.
Find the perfect rhythm in your form. Meet the P4.
The P4 is a professional ceramic paddle engineered for the potter who needs a versatile, medium-profile tool for structural refinement. I designed this paddle to sit exactly between the broad P1 and the focused P5, offering a balanced contact area that works beautifully on everything from small yunomis to medium-sized pitchers. It is the ideal pottery tool for gently persuading a round form into a soft square or for compressing the walls of a vessel to ensure it stands true and strong.
Hand-crafted in my workshop from our premium high-density timber, the P4 is built to be a reliable partner in your daily studio practice. Its weight and ergonomics are calibrated to provide a satisfying, controlled impact that allows you to feel the clay respond beneath the wood. Every P4 is hand-sanded to a professional artisan finish, creating a surface that is naturally water-resistant and incredibly smooth, preventing any unwanted sticking during the shaping process.
Why the P4 is a versatile studio essential:
- Balanced Structural Profiling: A medium-width profile designed for general-purpose faceting and structural modification.
- Dynamic Compression: Provides the ideal surface area to consolidate clay particles, increasing the structural integrity of your walls.
- Comfort-Grip Handle: The handle is specifically shaped to prevent slipping and reduce hand fatigue during intensive paddling sessions.
- Premium Hardwood Build: Crafted from select timber and hand-finished by me to ensure a smooth, professional glide over wet or leather-hard clay.
Warning: The P4 is so well-balanced you might find it difficult to go back to throwing simple round pots. Precision shaping is habit-forming!
